Channel Your Inner Olympian: Your Journey to Figure Skating

Your Journey to Figure Skating Starts Here

Every four years, the world is mesmerized by the Winter Olympics. We watch in awe as skaters combine raw athletic power with the grace of a dancer, spinning in a blur of motion and landing gravity-defying jumps. It’s a spectacle that leaves viewers of all ages wondering: “Could I ever glide like that?”

At Tim Hortons Iceplex, we believe the answer is a resounding yes. Whether you are a parent watching your child try to spin in the living room or an adult who has always dreamed of mastering the ice, we have the perfect pathway to turn that Olympic inspiration into reality.

Step 1: The Foundation – Skating 101

Before you can master a spiral or a jump, you have to find your balance. Our Skating 101 program is the essential first chapter for every skater. This program is designed for the absolute beginner—those who have never stepped on the ice or those who still feel a bit “wobbly.”

  • Confidence First: We focus on the fundamentals—learning how to fall safely, standing back up, and finding your “ice legs” through fun, engaging drills.
  • For Everyone: We offer tracks for both children and adults, ensuring that every age group feels comfortable and supported.

A Shared Vision: Our Partnership with Genesee Figure Skating Club (GFSC)

At Tim Hortons Iceplex, we are more than just a rink; we are a hub for the Rochester skating community. We are proud to be a committed partner of the Genesee Figure Skating Club (GFSC).

While we provide the world-class ice, the GFSC brings decades of expertise. We share a unified vision: to grow participation in ice sports and foster a lifelong love for the rink. Because of this partnership, our skaters don’t just learn to move; they learn from the very best in the sport.

Step 2: Finding Your Edge – Figure Skating 101

Once you have mastered the basics in Skating 101, it’s time to find your artistic edge. Figure Skating 101 (FS101) is the official “Bridge Program” in our pathway, and this is where our partnership with the GFSC truly shines.

The Genesee Figure Skating Club provides the professional on-ice instruction for all FS101 sessions. Under the guidance of their expert coaching staff, you will begin to transition from basic skating to the specialized techniques of figure skating, including:

  • Precision Edges & Turns: Learning how to use the physical blade to create smooth, rhythmic movement.
  • Introduction to Artistry: Coordinating arm and body movements to tell a story on the ice.
  • Introductory Jumps & Spins: Taking those first exciting steps toward rotation and lift.

Step 3: Taking the Leap – Joining the Club

Once you’ve completed Figure Skating 101, the journey doesn’t end—it evolves. The natural next step for skaters who want to continue their progress is Joining the Genesee Figure Skating Club.

Becoming a club member opens the door to a whole new world of skating opportunities. The GFSC offers a comprehensive environment for skaters to grow, including:

  • U.S. Figure Skating Testing: Work through the official levels of the U.S. Figure Skating curriculum, earning recognized achievements in freestyle, ice dance, or moves in the field.
  • Competitive Opportunities: From local showcases to sanctioned regional competitions, club membership gives you the platform to perform and compete.
  • Specialized Disciplines: Explore synchronized skating, ice dance, or theater on ice.
  • Community & Mentorship: Join a supportive network of skaters and families who share your passion.
