Local Partnership Launches ‘The Can Shack’ to Provide Direct Funding for Rochester Ice Cats Special Hockey Team

A new initiative has launched at the Tim Hortons Iceplex to provide funding for the Rochester Ice Cats Special Hockey team. The Can Shack, a permanent beverage container drop-off location, is now officially open, offering community members a simple way to convert their recyclables into vital resources for the athletes.

Located directly outside the main entrance of the Tim Hortons Iceplex, The Can Shack accepts all containers redeemable under the New York State Returnable Container Act (NY Bottle Bill). One hundred percent of the deposit value collected is routed directly to the Ice Cats organization.

The funds generated are critical for maintaining low-cost, inclusive programs and providing specialized resources, allowing every player, regardless of ability, to experience the full benefits of the sport.

Fueling the Mission: Where Donations Go

The financial support derived from The Can Shack is essential for covering the core expenses that make special hockey possible and accessible:

  • Specialized Equipment: Funding adaptive gear and necessary equipment.
  • Team Travel: Supporting costs for tournaments and away games that foster team bonding.
  • Program Accessibility: Keeping program costs low to ensure financial barriers do not prevent participation.

The impact of these programs extends far beyond the rink. As one Ice Cat parent shared, “The sense of community and support within the team has been invaluable, and I am grateful for the positive impact it has had on her development. Watching her grow and thrive in this environment has been truly rewarding.”
