Getting started with youth hockey can feel confusing. The path into organized sports can seem even trickier. That’s why we built simple, step-by-step programs that are fun and fit your busy schedule.

In partnership with Rochester Coalition Hockey and Rochester Edge Girls Hockey, this playbook guides you through every stage of your child’s hockey journey. Their experienced coaches will be on the ice to share hands-on tips. They help new players learn the game. They also help new parents understand how organized youth hockey works.

What to expect

  • Clear steps from first skate to team play
  • Friendly, age-appropriate instruction
  • Short, flexible sessions that fit your week
  • A welcoming community for players and parents

Next steps

  • Start with our intro programs.
  • Then, move into the right level with help from our coaches.
  • Finally, follow the playbook to join a team with confidence.

Why it works—Because we focus on fun first, kids stay engaged. Meanwhile, parents get clear guidance at each step. As a result, the whole family enjoys the journey.

WHY PLAY HOCKEY?

Hockey is more than a game. It shapes kids for life. First, it builds core skills. On the ice, they learn to skate, pass, and shoot. More importantly, they learn to fall and get back up. As a result, they develop real perseverance for the challenges ahead.

Plus, hockey teaches teamwork. Individual talent shines inside a strong team. In the locker room and on the ice, shared effort creates true friendships. Over time, those bonds last long after the final horn.

In addition, hockey builds responsibility and discipline. It rewards quick thinking and sharp focus. For parents, the best part is watching a child grow confident, resilient, and collaborative. In the end, hockey becomes more than a sport. It becomes a journey that shapes character.

ICEPLEX PROGRAMMING PROGRESSION

Family life is busy. That’s why we make our programs simple to schedule.

  • All introductory classes run on the same days each week.
  • This steady rhythm makes planning easy as your child moves up.
  • Each program lasts eight weeks, so transitions feel smooth.
  • Unlike full-season commitments, shorter sessions let kids learn at their own pace.

Flexible pathways

If your child falls in love with hockey, you can add more ice time. Sign up for multiple classes in a session to skate twice a week. Fast learners can also move ahead sooner. Depending on age, we offer a path to fast‑track into organized youth hockey. Whether you want to test the waters or dive in, our programs flex to fit your needs.

Easy start and gear

Getting started is easy. First‑time participants can use our loaner equipment, so you don’t have to buy before you try.

This is the playbook that outlines your child's journey from their first time on the ice to joining an organized youth hockey team.

STEP #1: LEARNING TO ICE SKATE

Skating 101 Program

Skating 101 is the first step for any child interested in playing hockey. This 8-week program provides a solid foundation of skating skills, which is crucial for a positive first experience and for developing into a successful hockey player.

The 8-week cycle is designed to align with our Next Step Programming, so the start and end dates match up perfectly. This creates a smooth transition for participants as they graduate from Skating 101 and move on to higher-level programs.

Skating 101 runs year-round and is offered on various days to accommodate different schedules.

STEP #2: THE INTRODUCTION TO HOCKEY

Timbits Hockey 101 Program

Timbits Hockey 101 is an entry-level program designed to introduce children to the game of ice hockey in a fun and positive atmosphere. This program allows new players to try the sport without a major financial or time commitment. They provide free equipment kits to all participants, so there is no need to purchase gear to get started.

Over the course of the 8-week program, which runs year-round on multiple days of the week, the focus is on foundational hockey skills, including skating technique, early stick handling, and shooting technique.

Hockey 101 is run in partnership with the Rochester Coalition and Rochester Edge youth hockey organizations. They are dedicated to helping every participant flourish and develop a love for the game.

STEP #3: THE INTRODUCTION TO BEING ON A TEAM

Timbits Hockey 201 Program

Timbits Hockey 201 is the vital second stage of our proven Learn to Play pathway (Hockey 101 is required prerequisite). This program is the critical bridge that prepares players for the full team experience in the Pre-Mites foundational youth hockey organization.

Running for 17 weeks with two on-ice sessions per week, the focus shifts to accelerated skill advancement, including improved skating proficiency and the introduction of team concepts through fun, multi-station practices. Participants also receive 6 hours of structured, fun game time to experience real competition in a low-pressure setting.

The program is run in partnership with the Rochester Coalition and Rochester Edge youth hockey organizations, whose experienced coaches ensure high-quality training and a positive, high-energy environment.

STEP #4: THE BRIDGE TO ORGANIZED HOCKEY

PRE-MITE PROGRAM

The Rochester Coalition (ROCO) Pre-Mite program is an excellent first step into the world of organized youth hockey. Geared toward players ages 4 to 6, this full-season program from September to March focuses on building a strong foundation in individual skill development, skating proficiency, and character.

Held at the Tim Horton's Iceplex, the program provides a fun, positive learning environment where players will participate in two practices per week, along with games and jamborees (hockey events where other pre-mite programs come together to play mini games).

Participants receive a jersey and have the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills into action during mini-games throughout the season.
