A Weekend of Joy: The Friendship Festival Returns to Tim Hortons Iceplex

BRIGHTON, NY – This weekend, Tim Hortons Iceplex becomes the epicenter of inclusive sports as we host the Rochester Friendship Festival. Organized by Rochester Special Hockey – Rochester Ice Cats, this international tournament brings together more than 300 athletes for a weekend defined by sportsmanship, inclusion, and the pure joy of the game.

Celebrating over 20 years of fostering community through sport, the Friendship Festival has grown into a premier destination for 16+ teams traveling from across the United States and Canada.

Focusing on the Positive

While the competition on the ice is spirited, the true mission of the festival is found in the atmosphere of the arena. For the coaches and volunteers, the success of the weekend isn’t measured in wins, but in the environment created for the players.

“It is just amazing to see everybody smiling, laughing, cheering each other on, and it’s just a positive environment where everybody’s supporting each other,” said Nikolle Van Stralen, Head Coach of the Rochester Ice Cats.

Van Stralen emphasizes that for these athletes, the excitement comes from the play itself rather than the final score. “They’re just so excited. You know, make good passes to their teammates, score goals. They always come back to the bench with huge smiles on their face,” she added.

Building Life Skills Through Hockey

The Rochester Ice Cats program is designed to give individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities a professional-grade hockey experience tailored to their needs. Coach Tom Simmons notes that the rink serves as a classroom for life.

“Hockey, it’s a game that we utilize to teach individuals how to be responsible, how to work within teamwork [and] how to socialize,” said Simmons. That social bond is felt throughout the facility as players from different countries reconnect.

Tournament Highlights

Visitors to the Iceplex this weekend can expect high-energy hockey across all four rinks. Key features of the weekend include:

  • The Future Stars Program: A dedicated session for the youngest and newest skaters to build confidence in a supportive environment.
  • The Disney Dance Party: A signature off-ice tradition where players trade their jerseys for costumes to celebrate their new friendships.
  • The “Can Shack”: Located permanently outside the Iceplex entrance, 100% of the proceeds from recycled containers dropped here go directly to the Rochester Ice Cats to keep the program affordable for families.
